The best part of block 1 is the fact that you get the flowers pre-cut. When I was working on this project, I had 1 little flower die cut that was the right size. I explained to my husband that I would need close to 300 flowers and would have to use it that many times. He said maybe I should buy a couple more of those die cut sets. I interpreted that to mean 3 more. (my flower was part of a larger set) So armed with 4 flower die cuts, I set out to cut out all of my flowers:
It took forever and I had to be careful not to put them too close, because those little dies had a tendency to move around before I got them in the machine. In my planning with Midway Wool, we decided that you would definitely want the flowers all cut out. So we ordered a die with 130 flowers and your project has them all cut for you.
As always, applique all of the wool in place before beginning the embellishment stitches. How close should the flowers be? Just close enough that they can’t all lay flat. Here I was test driving the “closeness” with applique pins. You could do the same on your first butterfly bush bloom. I used 17 or 18 on most of the blooms. (um…weird pink color to my photo)
This is my block 1 before I got the flowers attached (I was waiting for my dies to arrive). This image shows how you can work all of the embellishment stitches that aren’t in the danger zone. All of the one hydrangea bloom fits, so that one is embellished. Only half of the hydrangea leaf fits, so I just did the outside edge on the top. Everything that you do before sewing the blocks together is less you’ll have to do with that bigger piece later.
